Weekly wrap-up

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Mon: 2 Wildwood laps with Nate and Mark. Progressively picked up the pace after the 4th mile and felt really smooth for the first time in quite a while.

Tues: Biked at LA Fitness and lifted

Wed: 9 miles with Jon around Camp hill. While we were generally running pretty slow, my HR was the lowest I’ve seen it in a while. I think my some of my fitness is returning.

Thu: Was planning on either biking or doing 1 Wildwood loop. Ended up joining Ryan and Mark for 2 loops. Coming down with a cold, I hope it breaks soon.

Fri: Worked on presentation from after dinner Thurs night until 1:30 AM. Woke up at 5:00 AM to drive to 4 hours to Pittsburgh. Met with customer until just before 5:00 PM. Drive home took about 4 hours. Totally exhausted.

Sat: Ran 12 miles with Ryan on the Conewago trail in about 1:43:30 (8:48 pace). Garmin called it a bit short due to the tunnel right before the turnaround at 6 miles. Weather was a bit warm. Might need to start long runs earlier in the morning when it is cooler.

Sun: Woke up really early and watched some of London Marathon streaming video.  After watching some awesome racing I was tempted to run, but don’t want to push it after my long run yesterday. My wife and I were going to leave for NYC around 9:00 to see “Legally Blond” on Broadway (which was pretty good), so I ended up doing a quick bike warm-up and lifting routine at LA Fitness.  I felt kind of hard-core being one of about 6-8 people waiting for LA Fitness to unlock the doors at 8am.

Plans for next week: Keep slowly adding mileage. Will only do a mini-taper for LVHM since it is no longer an “A” race.

Interesting Article on Heart Rate During Exercise

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

I saw an article in the NY Times “The Flutter Over Heart Rate” that talks about some people’s obsession with measuring heart rates. I’ve always been (probably a bit too much) interested in measuring my heart rate since I was in a 7th grade science class and we were discussing pulse rates. I can remember measuring mine at 60 and thinking it was neat that my heart was beating almost exactly once a second.

I started getting really interested in measuring my HR  again about two years ago when I started getting back on the exercise bandwagon.  I like checking the stats from my Garmin 305 and seeing the pace per mile versus HR to get a feel of my level of running fitness.  I often measure my pulse in the morning to detect if I have residual fatigue from workouts or races.  If my pulse is elevated by more than 3-4 beats a minute, I’ll either cancel or substantially reduce any planned workout I have for the day.

Weekly wrap-up

More reviews of the Dash GPS have come in.  The newer reviews tend to be a lot more balanced (since they aren’t all from people involved in the beta program or Dash shills).  I still really want one of the units, but given then price tag, I’ll  wait a while and see how the device works once they push out a software update.

This week went fairly-well exercise wise.  I can still feel my hamstring sometimes during workouts, but it hasn’t actually hurt in the past week.  I’m hoping the strengthening exercises and stretching are helping.

Mon: rode stationary bike @ LA Fitness.

Tue: ran 2 laps with Mark and Ryan around Wildwood Lake.

Wed: Off

Thu: ran 2 laps by myself at Wildwood Lake.  Picked up the pace on the 2nd lap and felt good.

Fri: rode stationary bike @ LA Fitness + lifting

Sat: ran 11 miles with Jon, Nate, and Eric at the Newville rail trail.  This was the first day I noticed many birds out.  Made it feel like spring is really arriving.

Sun: rode stationary bike @ LA Fitness and lifted weights in the morning.  Wasn’t planning on running at all but read a bunch of running forums and got the urge, so went out and jogged 2 miles around the ‘hood before dinner.
