Training Log 2008.02.18 – 2008.02.20
Monday: 5 min walk, 1.5 mile jog warm-up, 5.5 miles @ 7:00/mile pace (averaged 159 BPM), 10 min walk cool-down. Felt awesome aerobically, but my left hamstring started tightening up a bit towards the end.
Tuesday: Took an easy recovery day of 45 minutes on the stationary bike (averaged 120 BPM) to avoid hamstring stress.
Wednesday: 5 min walk warm-up, 6 miles at about an 8:30/mile pace (averaged 133 BPM), 5 min walk cool-down. No hamstring discomfort.
Plan for tomorrow: Taking a friend to see Spirit of the Marathon and will do a tempo workout assuming I don’t feel any hamstring tightness.

Bill, what is your stretching routine look like? You seem to be having a bit of difficulty with ham and quad tightness, and I am wondering if you are stretching well enough?

I think my lack of any stretching routine greatly contributes to the problem. In the past I’ve been frustrated by stretching since I am so incredibly inflexible and I’ve read a lot of semi-conflicting advice (static versus dynamic, warm versus cold) that I’ve pretty much just put it off. I just need to suck it up and ease into a routine. I’ve also had a few friends try Yoga and say it has worked wonders for them, so I might look into that as well.
