OpenSolaris on NB205 tips

Installing OpenSolaris

The NB205 does not include a DVD drive so the easiest way to install OpenSolaris is either hook up a USB based CD/DVD drive or create a bootable USB image. You can download a USB image from http://genunix.org.

I downloaded a build 125 OpenSolarisUSB image and then burned the image to a USB flash drive using theLive USB Creator utility on a Windows desktop.

After inserting the USB drive, power on the netbook and hold down the F12 key. This should present you with a menu of boot options including the USB drive. Once the USB drive is selected, just follow the normal OpenSolaris installation steps.

Enable suspend and resume

Edit /etc/power.conf and add
s3-support enable
and then run
pmconfig
svcadm restart hal

If you select the Gnome System->Shutdown menu item you should now be presented with an option for suspend
If you go into the Gnome System->Preferences->Power menu item you can set the default behavior for the lid being closed to be suspend

Increasing visible screen real estate

Since the screen size is so small, you will likely have a more usable experience by setting the 'auto-hide' property on the top and bottom Gnome toolbars
